Box Score Marlins Upset Bid Falls short at No. 1 Washington and Lee
LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year Ricky Perrault got the Marlins on the board first, but No. 1 seeded Washington and Lee University rallied for a 4-2 victory over No. 5 Virginia Wesleyan in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer semifinals Saturday morning.
Both teams made pushes in the first half, but were turned away on multiple occasions as the defense managed to take the ball away before shots could be made.
Perrault was the first player to find the back of the net on the afternoon, coming through at 34:33 with a rip from 18 yards out on the right side.
The lead did not last long as Washington and Lee answered just three minutes later as Reeves Duggan crossed the ball in to James Brady who headed it home.
The Marlin defense kept the game scoreless at the half despite collecting all seven fouls in the first half and five off-sides.
Washington and Lee came out strong in the second stanza, taking two shots, one saved by Connor Kirkham while collecting a corner in the first four minutes.
Over the course of the next 20 minutes, the Generals added goals from Dylan Ritch and Duggan while limiting VWC to just one shot, off the foot of Perrault that sailed just wide.
W&L ruined any chance of the upset in the 77th minute when Miles Bent scored for the 4-1 lead.
Travis Walke added a final score for the Marlins at 80:55 to bookend the scoring on the afternoon.
Kirkham finished with two saves for the Marlins while Gillen Beck made one stop for Washington and Lee (14-3-2).
