Volleyball wins Battle of ODAC Unbeatens

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Both teams came into Wednesday's action with a perfect record in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, but Virginia Wesleyan stayed perfect with a 25-20, 27-25, 25-17 victory over Washington and Lee.

Two of the better hitting teams in the league, Virginia Wesleyan held a large advantage in Wednesday's match, posting a .315 hitting mark against just .188 for Washington and Lee.

The Marlins led throughout the first set before the Generals rallied in the second set to take a 17-16 edge. First-year Doneisha Hall posted a kill for VWC on the next four points as Virginia Wesleyan regained the lead at 20-17.

Momentum swung back to Washington and Lee as the Generals won the next five points, but a pair of kills by Dare Wright knotted the contest back at 22-22. A Maddie Starr service ace put the Marlins back up one point.

The two squads went back and forth over the next several points, tied at 25, before kills from Hall and Kristina Scott captured the second set for VWC.

The contest shifted the way of the Marlins as VWC went up 2-0 in sets as the Generals managed just one lead in the final set, 4-3, before Virginia Wesleyan put the match away.

Anna Lausberg had 16 kills for Washington and Lee (11-10/6-1 ODAC) as Elena West posted 31 assists to go along with a match-high 21 digs from Katie Volk.

Tiffany Barrett had 13 kills and 16 digs while Emilee Pierson added 20 assists and Kirstin Sessoms posted 15. Marin Crowder led the Marlins with 19 digs to go along with 10 assists.

Virginia Wesleyan (19-6/7-0), winners of 10-straight matches, travel to Randolph-Macon College this weekend for matches with Emory & Henry (10-10/3-3) and Guilford (5-12/2-4) on Sunday.
