Lambert named to all-tournament team as Marlins finish 2-2

SALIBSURY, Md. -- Virginia Wesleyan College senior Alex Lambert was named to an all-tournament team for the second consecutive weekend as she was included one of eight women named to the Salisbury University Sea Gull Classic all-tourney team.

Virginia Wesleyan posted a 2-2 finish, which included a 3-0 victory over William Peace University and a 3-0 loss to the University of Scranton on Saturday.  The Marlins opened with a 3-0 loss to host Salisbury, but bounced back to knock off Eastern Mennonite University 3-1.

Lambert (Alexandria/Hayfield) emerged strong at the net once again for the Marlins, finishing with 48 kills.  That total included a career-high 20 in a 25-21, 26-28, 25-14, 25-22 win over EMU.  She becomes the eighth woman in VWC history to record 20 or more kills in a match.

Sophomore Tiffany Barrett (Stafford/North Stafford) gave VWC a solid 1-2 punch near the net as she finished with 42 kills, leading the way with 15 in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-15 loss to Salisbury.  Senior Michaela Holbrooks (Brookneal/Naruna William Campbell) contributed with 30 kills, highlighted by nine against EMU.

Junior Kirstin Sessoms (Virginia Beach/Bayside) recorded 124 assists.  That total the second highest output of her career to date as she recorded 45 against EMU.

Scranton improved to 6-1 by outlasting the Marlins 25-20, 25-14, 26-24.  Lambert recorded 11 kills and Sesssoms had 26 assists in the match that included eight digs and four aces from Marin Crowder (Charlottesville/Crozet Western Albermarle).  Sessoms also had seven digs.

VWC ended the tournament with a 25-22, 25-19, 25-12 win over Peace, helped by Barrett's 10 kills. Sessom contributed with 24 assists and six digs, while Crowder added eight digs.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Wednesday, Sept. 17, opening Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Eastern Mennonite University at 7 p.m.
