Marlins produce 4-0 record in York Invitational

YORK, Pa. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's weekend in the York College Spartan Invitational started with a victory that snapped a four-game winning streak for Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham and only got better.

By the time the competition ended in the volleyball tournament, the Marlins had improved their season record to 13-4 following a sweep of four opponents.  Following a 3-0 win over New Jersey's FDU, Virginia Wesleyan defeated host York 3-1, New York's Farmingdale State University 3-0, and closed with a 3-0 win over Pennsylvania's Albright College.

Outstanding play at the net helped guide VWC to the sweep as the Marlins recorded an impressive 158-103 advantage in kills. SeniorAlex Lambert (Alexandria/Hayfield) led the effort with 43, including a high of 17 in the 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 victory over Albright.  Sophomore Tiffany Barrett (Stafford/North Stafford)contributed to the kill total with 37, lead the Marlins' 25-23, 26-24, 25-18 win over FDU-Florham.  Sophomore Jessica Quinlan (Marlton, N.J./Cherkoee) added 22 kills.

Junior Kirsten Sessoms (Virginia Beach/Bayside) helped put the offense into motion by recording 20 or more assists in three matches, including 25 against FDU.  She finished with 76 assists overall, and rookie Emilee Pierson (Sterling/Park View) recorded 53, highlighted by 16 in the win over York, 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-11.

Junior Marin Crowder (Charlottesville/Crozet Western Albemarle) led the digs production for the Marlins, finishing with 48 in the four matches, followed by Quinlan with 39.  The Marlins recorded a high of 59 digs against York, led by Crowder with 15, Sessoms with 13, and Quinlan with 11.  VWC also produced 18 block assists against York.  Sophomore Madelyn McMurry (Springfield/West Springfield) produced a season-high five and senior Michaela Holbrooks (Brookneal/Naruna William Campbell) and Lambert added four each.

VWC returns to competition on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when the Marlins host the WildCats (12-6) of Randolph College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match beginning at 7 p.m.
