Marlins take 12-inning game en route to split with Washington and Lee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ty Boothe had definitely seen better days at the plate.

His first five times at bat failed to produce a hit on Sunday, but that all changed in his sixth appearance for Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins in the first game of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader against the Generals of Washington and Lee University. The rookie from Virginia Beach (Floyd E. Kellam) smacked a single to left center field to send in the winning run in a 3-2, 12-inning victory on Marlins Field.

Boothe's hit plated senior Brett Sutryk (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) who drilled a double to center field earlier. Rookie Taylor Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor) drew an intentional walk to put two runners on base before Boothe connected for the game-winning hit with two outs.

Washington and Lee (18-11, 11-9) salvaged a split by posting a 9-5 victory in the second game. The Generals trailed 3-1 after three innings, but outscored VWC 7-2 in the final four innings to record the win.

Virginia Wesleyan (14-22, 8-12) ended a scoreless first game in the sixth inning when Sutryk singled, scoring Justin Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor) who singled up the middle earlier. But, Washington and Lee (18-11, 11-9) jumped in front with a two-run eighth inning that included just one hit, a single by Nick Buimi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert).

The Generals threatened again in the top of the ninth with a single from Kyle Witty (Richmond/Douglas Freeman) and a walk to Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula), but a strike out and fly out ended the inning.  Virginia Wesleyan tied the score at 2-all in the bottom of the inning when junior Casey King (Virginia Beach/Bayside) ripped a double to left field to score Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville/Carroll County), who also singled to the left earlier.

Both teams put runners on base in the following innings, but neither could produce the go-ahead hit until Boothe found the pitch he liked in the 12th.

Virginia Wesleyan outhit the Generals 12-10, led by Sutryk with a double and two singles. Jordan Miller (Chesapeake/Grassfield) connected for two singles and Lineberry added a double and single.

Junior pitcher Alex Tucci (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) entered the game in relief in the eighth inning and produced one of his best outings of the season en route to picking up the win.  He faced 20 batters in 4.2 innings and struck out a season-high seven batters.  He walked one and allowed four hits and no runs.

Senior Brooks Kirby (Warwickshire, United Kingdom/Cobham School) started on the mound for the Marlins and worked seven solid innings.  He scattered five hits, struck out one batter, and did not allow any runs.

Witty and Buimi both finished wth three singles for the Generals.  Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) pitched the first seven innings for the Generals, allowing six hits and one earned run. Cory Smith (Roanoke/Hidden Valley) worked the final 4.2 innings.  He struck out four, walked two and gave up six hits and two earned runs.

Three Generals shared time on the mound in the second game, including Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep). He pitched five innings, striking out six batters and allowing just four hits and two runs.

Virginia Wesleyan used four pitchers, starting with Reid Hoffler (Chesapeake/Suffolk Nansemond River), who worked the first five innings.  He struck out two, walked two, and allowed seven hits and one earned run.

Washington and Lee finished with a 16-7 advantage in hits, led by Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) who recorded three hits, including two home runs that drove in five runs. He drilled a three-run shot in a four-run sixth inning and added a two-run shot in the seventh.

Zach Bach (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) and Miller connected for a double each for the Marlins. Boothe connected for two singles.
