Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Shenandoah University produced three runs in the top of the eighth inning to help pull out a 4-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday at Marlins Field.
The Hornets (26-6, 15-2 ODAC), ranked No. 15 and 21 by two national polls, used a batter hit by a pitch, a VWC error, and singles from Nolan Overby (Peterburg/Matoaca) and Daniel Freshley (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) to help score the decisive runs.
Virginia Wesleyan (12-20, 6-11 ODAC) came back in the bottom of the inning to threaten when Nic Kurz (Yorktown/Grafton) drew a walk and moved to second on a single up the middle from senior Brett Sutryk (Bath, N.Y./Haverling). Shenandoah brought in pitcher Garrett Wooddell (Springfield/West Springfield) to take over for starter Vince Claudio (Forest/Jefferson Forest), and he retired the two batters he faced in the inning to end the threat.
A well-played game by both teams produced a scoreless deadlock heading in the fourth inning when Shenandoah jumped in front 1-0. Michael Paul (Red Hill, Pa./Perkiomen) doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a two-out single from Freshley.
Virginia Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Sutryk kept the Marlins alive with a single through the right side and junior Zach Bach (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) drew a walk. Junior Jordan Miller (Chesapeake/Grassfield) came up with the big hit, belting a single into right to plate the game-tying run.
The loss overshadowed a standout pitching effort by junior Dylan Stoskus (Ashburn/Arlington), who posted a complete game. He struck out eight batters, his second highest total of the season, walked two, and gave up eight hits and two earned runs. Stoskus is now 2-3 overall.
Sutryk led VWC hitting with three singles and Bach belted out a double.
Freshley finished 3-for-3 at the plate for Shenandoah. Claudio improved to 6- 1 on the mound for the Hornets, working 7.1 innings and striking out four batters. He walked four and gave up five hits and one earned run. Wooddell faced six batters in relief and struck out one. He allowed just a hit.
Virginia Wesleyan competes in non-conference competition on Monday, April 14, at Apprentice School at 5 p.m.
