Box Score ASHLAND, Va. -- Hits were definitely there for the Virginia Wesleyan College baseball team in Thursday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game at Randolph-Macon College.
The Marlins recorded double-digit hits for the fourth consecutive game and the ninth time in the past 12 outings, but it still wasn't enough to notch a win. While VWC outhit the host Yellow Jackets 15-13, Randolph-Macon owned the edge in scoring en route to a 9-5 win.
The Jackets (12-8, 7-2 ODAC) wiped out a 4-2 deficit with a four-run fourth inning and never trailed again. R-MC connect for four hits in the inning, including a two-run double from Nicholas Maoilo (Powhatan/Powhatan) to move in front.
Virginia Wesleyan (9-14, 3-6 ODAC) trailed 2-0 early, but tied the game with a two-run second inning helped by three hits and an error. The Marlins took their 4-2 lead with a two-run third inning. After rookie C.J. Lindsay (Remington/Bealeton Liberty) singled, rookie Taylor Erby (Norfolk/Lake Taylor) doubled. An error scored Lindsay and a passed ball sent Erby home.
After R-MC regained the lead in the fourth, Virginia Wesleyan produced enough offense to put runners on base in every inning that followed, except for the ninth. But, the scoring didn't follow. Randolph-Macon padded its lead with a three-run eighth.
Erby led Virginia Wesleyan hitting witha 4-for-5 showing, highlighted by a pair of doubles. Senior Brett Sutryk (Bath, N.Y./Haverling) and junior Zach Bach (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) connected for three hits each in four times at the plate. Rookie Austin Gammon (Chesterfield/L.C. Bird) added two hits, including a double.
Five Marlins combined to strike out three Jackets, walk four, and surrender 13 hits. Rookie Mike Mumejian (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox) took the loss for VWC. Four pitchers worked for R-MC, with Jamie Hendrick (Chesterfield/L.C. Bird) improving to 4-1 on the mound after five innings of work. He struck out four, walked one, and gave up 10 hits. Glenn McLaughlin (Richmond/Douglas Freeman) recorded his third save.
Tim Benjamin (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led Jacket hitting with a triple and two singles.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, March 29, hosting Shenandoah University in an ODAC twinbill beginning at 12 p.m.
