Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Five Virginia Wesleyan College players scored in double figures Saturday to lead the Marlins to a 75-57 victory over the host Quakers of Guilford College.
Virginia Wesleyan (19-6) never trailed in the victory that solidified the No. 2 seed for the Marlins in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship tournament. VWC will begin tournament play in quarterfinal action on Friday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. The Marlins will face the winner of a first round game between Shenandoah University and Bridgewater College.
Saturday's game was also an important regional game. Virginia Wesleyan entered the game ranked No. 2 in the region, while Guilford was ranked No. 6.
Guilford (17-8) trailed 14-2 early against the Marlins as rookieKhory Moore (Arlington/Wakefield) and junior Cameron Owens (Centreville/Centerville) combined to score the first 12 points for Virginia Wesleyan. Seniors Trent Batson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and D.J. Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) and junior Greg Montgomery (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) added the scoring to help the Marlins open up a 28-9 lead.
Four consecutive three-pointers by Sedric Nady (Virginia Beach/Landstown), Woodmore, and Moore helped Virginia Wesleyan to open up a 42-17 lead with 3:15 remaining before halftime. The Marlins led 42-21 at halftime.
Trever Hyatt and Jake Hopkins came through with early second half scoring for Guilford, but not enough to change momentum in the game. Senior Colby Heard (Virginia Beach/Tallwood) did all of his scoring in a little more than six minutes in the second half to help the Marlins to open up a 67-43 lead with 6:50 on the clock.
Guilford cut the spread to 16 points in the final minutes, but no closer.
Woodmore led all scoring with 19 points, hitting 4-of-8 three-point shots. Heard hit 7-of-8 field goal attempts to score 14 points, Owens tallied 13, Moore finished with 12, and Nady scored 10. Owens also led Virginia Wesleyan rebounding with nine.
Hyatt scored 18 points to lead Guilford, followed by Will Koppenhaver with 12, and Hopkins with 10. Koppenhaver also led the Quakers with nine rebounds.
