Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- One of the first big upsets of the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball season was recorded Wednesday.
Unfortunately for Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins, it was at their expense.
The Marlins ran into an inspired Randolph College WildCats team that not only won the match, but did it in three sets. Once the 'Cats outlasted the Marlins 30-28 in the first set, they followed the same script...coming on strong down the stretch...to post 25-22 and 29-27 set decisions for the match win.
Randolph (13-6, 3-2 ODAC) was led by senior Jordan Templin (Ferrum/Franklin County), who hurt the Marlins consistently with solid kills. She finished with 20 overall and was the only WildCat player to record more than six. Senior setter Kerry McMichael (Westminster, S.C./West Oak) aided in the win with 32 assists, senor Katherine Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn./Sullivan Central) recorded 14 digs, and sophomore Noelle Wojciechowski (Greensboro, N.C./Page) produced three solo blocks.
Sophomore Tiffany Barrett (Stafford/North Stafford)produced 14 kills to lead VWC (13-5, 3-1 ODAC), which also received 11 kils from senior Alex Lambert (Alexandria/Hayfield). Junior Kirstin Sessoms (Virginia Beach/Bayside) recorded 26 assists, junior Marin Crowder (Charlottesville/Crozet Western Albemarle) topped digs totals with 14 and Sophomore Jessica Quinlan (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) recorded 10 digs and two solo blocks.
Virginia Wesleyan will attempt to shake off the upset on Friday, Oct. 3, when the Marlins host Hollins University (4-13, 0-3 ODAC) in the Homecoming/Parents Weekend match beginning at 6 p.m.
