Off-night from the field dooms No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan on the road

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. -- Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets outscored No. 16 Virginia WesleyanCollege 8-0 in the early minutes of the second half to pull away and stay on track to 78-62 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory in the Creshaw Gymnasium Wednesday.

Virginia Wesleyan (12-4, 5-2) trailed just 38-31 at halftime, but could not ignite a consistent offense to keep up with the Jackets (12-4, 6-1), who moved into the top spot of the ODAC standings with the win. R-MC's victory extended a current winning streak to eight games.

Virginia Wesleyan led throughout most of the first half, building a seven-point edge several times.  But, Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh), Joe Hassell (Portsmouth/Indian River), and Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) helped spark the Jackets to wipe  out the deficit and take the lead by halftime.

D.J. Woodmore (Virgina Beach/Landstown)scored for VWC to stop Randolph-Macon's scoring run in the early minutes of the second half, but the Jackets produced a seven-point run to open up a 53-33 lead with 15:05 remaining in the game.  R-MC expanded its lead to 24 points down the stretch and VWC never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

Virginia Wesleyan entered the game ranked No. 3 nationally in three-pointers made per game with 10.5 each outing.  The Marlins could not find that long-range touch Wednesday however, launching 19 triples, but hitting just four.  R-MC hit 5-of-17.

Shooting woes for the Marlins were not limited to long-range shots however, as Virginia Wesleyan struggled from the field in general, hitting only 36.1% overall.  R-MC maintained control by nailing 56.6% from the field.

Rookie Khory Moore (Arlington/Wakefield)led Virginia Wesleyan with 18 points, followed by Woodmore with 10 and senior Trent Batson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) with nine.

Andre Simon (Newport News/Menchville) led R-MC with 23 points.

Virginia Wesleyan will attempt to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 25, when the Marlins host the Generals of Washington and Lee University at 2 p.m.
