Balanced scoring propels Marlins past Southern Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH -- It was a balanced afternoon of scoring for Virginia Wesleyan College's men's soccer team against the Knights of Southern Virginia University.

Six Marlins scored goals in a 6-1 non-conference victory on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

The Marlins (3-2) dominated the game, out-shooting the Knights (0-4) 33-4 and recording 11 corner kicks to SVU's one.

Virginia Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute when Josh Kemp put the ball into the left side of the net off an assist from Josh McNamara (Springfield/West Springfield).  Fifteen minutes later Josh Richardson (Hampton/Kecoughtan) gave VWC a 2-0 lead, booting the ball in from the right, assisted by Brian Cornell (Front Royal/Warren County).

The Marlins ended scoring in the first half in the 39th minute when Chris Cooke (Hampton/Phoebus) ripped the ball into the left corner from about 15 yards out. Tanner Martin (York, Pa./Suburban) was credited with the assist.

Kyle Tyree (Williamsburg/Bloomingdale) headed the ball into the middle of the net off a Carlos Munoz (Lynchburg/Jefferson Forest) assist to put Southern Virginia on the scoreboard in the 44th minute.

But, Virginia Wesleyan resumed its scoring pace just 23 seconds into the second half when Travis Walke (Virginia Beach/Landstown) scored off another Cornell assist.  The Marlins continued to build on the lead in the 57th minute with a goal by Isaac Arrington (DeSoto, Texas/DeSoto) and with 18 seconds remaining on a shot by Dillon Thompson (Chesapeake/Hickory. Kemp and Richardson assisted on the last two goals.

Declan Johnson (Hickory Creek, Texas/Lake Dallas) recorded nine saves for SVU and Connor Kirkham (Centreville/Chantilly Westfield) and Jason Hoernke (Clinton/Centreville) recorded one save each for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan competes Saturday, Sept. 14 at Eastern Mennonite University at 7 p.m.
