NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --  Senior Brian Cornell (Front Royal/Warren County) scored in the 60th minute Friday to help solidify a 2-0 Viginia Wesleyan College victory over Delaware's Wesley College in the Joe Pombriant/Christopher Newport University Classic.

Cornell took a feed from sophomore Brian Le (Springfield/West Springfield) on a corner kick and booted the ball over the top of the Wesley goalkeeper to pull away in the 2013 season opener.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to Captains Field on Saturday, Aug. 31, for a 7:30 p.m. showdown against the host CNU team.

Josh McNamara (Springfield/West Springfield) put the first goal of 2013 on the scoreboard for the Marlins. He put a shot into the left side of the goal in the 18th minute to help Virginia Wesleyan establish control of the non-conference contest.

VWC's defense turned in a strong effort, particularly in the first half when they held Wesley's Wolverines without a shot.  The Marlins posted a 7-0 advantage in shots in the half and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.  VWC out-kicked Wesley 15-5 overall and finished with a 6-4 edge in corners.

Sophomore goalie Connor Kirkham (Centerville/Chantilly Westfield) played all 90 minutes in goal for VWC and recorded one save. Tyler Dominiak (Dundalk, Md./Patapsco) had four saves for Wesley.
