Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse team pulled within two goals of host Washington and Lee University on Tuesday by the end of the third quarter in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinal game at Wilson Field.
But, the host Generals kept the Marlins scoreless in the fourth quarter and added three more goals to their own total to post a 13-8 victory.
Mike Moran (Woolrich, N.J./Kingsway Regional), Mike Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads), Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy), and Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) all scored a goal each in the third quarter to help Virginia Wesleyan pull within a 10-8 score. Connors, Currier and Papetti all scored in the final 4:47 of the period to turn momentum toward the Marlins.
VWC was unable to build on that strong close to the third quarter however, as Washington and Lee (14-3) added to its lead to advance to the conference semifinals on May 4.
The Generals bolted out to a 3-0 lead in the contest, but Moran and Connors scored consecutive goals for VWC to make it a 3-2 score. WLU scored the last three goals of the first quarter however, and the first three of the second period to open up a 9-2 lead. Papetti and Moran came through for the Marlins though, scoring a goal each in the final 2:06 to cut the deficit to 9-4 by halftime.
The crowd of 880 watched Virginia Wesleyan stage a comeback in the third quarter however, as the Marlins outscored Washington and Lee 4-1 to make it a 10-8 score entering the final quarter.
Moran led VWC scoring overall with three goals and Connors and Papetti added two each.
Currier added a goal and a game-high three assists to improve his season point total to 74, a Virginia Wesleyan season record. His total surpasses the former Marlin record of 70 points established by Tom McGurty in 1995. Currier finishes his rookie season with a team-leading 38 assists, the second highest total in VWC history.
Senior goalkeeper Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) recorded 16 saves for the Marlins, raising his season total to a career-high 235. He finishes his career with 465 saves, ranking him No. 5 among VWC's all-time leaders.
Virginia Wesleyan finishes the season with a 9-7 record, the seventh winning campaign for the Marlins in the past eight years.
