NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Four top 10 finishes highlighted the opening competition of the 2013-14 indoor track and field season for the Virginia Wesleyan College squads on Saturday at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
Senior Darren Driscoll(Haymarket/Battlefield) topped the list of highlight results for VWC with an eighth place finish in the mile run in a time of 4:37.76. Sophomore Andrew Werner(Cheapeake/Western Branch) finished 15th in the event in a time of 4:50.49 and rookie Trevor Maloney(Houston, Del./Milford) followed at 18th (4:55.31).
Sophomore Ed Chase (Falls Church/J.E.B. Stuart) finished ninth for VWC in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-feet, 10.75 inches. Senior Randy Lott(Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox)provided another top 10 finish, taking the No. 10 spot in the 200 meter run (23.30). Lott also finished 17th in the 60 (7.06), as the DIII runner with the best time in the event. He also teamed with sophomore Chrishaud Hawkins(Capitol Heights, Md./Fairmont Heights) and rookies Trey White(Spotsylvania/Courtland) and Aires Reyes(Alexandria/St. Stephens and St. Agnes) to place 13th in the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:33.88.
Senior Courtney Mebane(Virginia Beach/Tallwood) emerged with a top 10 finish for the VWC women, placing seventh in the high jump at 4-11.75. Mebane also placed 18th in the 60 hurdles (9.55) and teamed with sophomore Shakira Mills(Hampton/Bethel) and rookies Amanda Cabrera-Case(Gloversville, N.Y./Gloversville) and Gabby Foreman (Newport News/Norfolk Maury) to place 21st in the 4x400 relay.
Other VWC highlights included Ethan Fowlkes(Quinton/New Kent) placing 11th in the triple jump (41-02.5), John Chapman(Newport News/Hampton Christian) placing 12th in the 200 (23.43), Cody Below (Norfolk/Virginia Beach Ocean Lakes), shot put, 12th (32-0.5); rookie Samantha Nason(Milford/Caroline), shot put, 14th (29-0.6), senior Courtney Burruss (Richmond/J.R. Tucker), shot put, 15th (29-02.75), and junior Liz Wade (Chesapeake/Great Bridge), 15th, 3000 run (11:17.15).
Six of the nine Old Dominion Athletic Conference members opened their track and field seasons on Saturday. In the men's competition, VWC produced current ODAC-leading performances in the 60 meter dash (Lott) and the men's 4x400 (Lott, White, Hawkins, Reyes). The men also own five of the top eight performances in the 60 and six of the top seven in the 200. On the women's side, ODAC-leading efforts were set in the 3K (Wade), the 60 meter hurdles (Mebane), the high jump (Mebane), and the 4x400 (Mebane, Mills, Cabrera-Case, Watson)l
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Jan. 18 at the University of Maryland Invitational.
