Woodmore scores 34, but No. 10 Marlins tripped in 2OTs

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Veteran players on the Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team must have that deja vu feeling about now.

It was this time last year when the nationally ranked Marlins were mired in a four-game losing streak.  Now the No. 10 ranked Marlins have dropped two consecutive games, including Tuesday's 95-87 double overtime loss to the host Eagles of the University of Mary Washington.

But, even after that four-game skid last year, the Marlins recovered to post a 23-8 season, that included the program's 13th straight NCAA tournament bid and an appearance in the Sweet 16. The 2013-14 team will attempt to get back to winning on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 5 p.m. when the Marlins host the Panthers of Ferrum College.

Tuesday's loss overshadowed another standout effort by senior All-American D.J. Woodmore (Virgnia Beach/Landstown), who ripped the nets for 34 points, one shy of his career high.  He connected on 12-of-28 field goal attempts, with most of his success from long range where he hit a career-high eight triples.  That was one shy of the VWC record set by Tom Palombo against Roanoke College in 1989.

Virginia Wesleyan attempted 55 three pointers in the game and hit only 13, including three by rookie Khory Moore (Arlington/Wakefield).  Mary Washington fired 31 triples and hit 14, led by Bradley Riester (Richmond/Monacan), who finished with 29 points.

VWC trailed 36-29 at halftime and fell behind by 13 points midway through the second half.  Moore hit three consecutive triples to revive the Marlins however, and Virginia Wesleyan outscored the Eagles 31-18 in the final 10 minutes to tie the score at 73.  Woodmore scored 14 points in that run.  The Marlins had the chance to win the game at the free throw line, but missed the front end of a bonus situation with seven seconds remaining.

Dom Morra (Burke/Lake Braddock) and Dylan Farinet (Westmoreland/Colonial Beach) helped give UMW the lead through most of the first OT period, before Breven Lyons (Newport News/Warwick) hit two free throws to give the Marlins an 82-81 lead with 39 seconds on the clock. John Yoxthimer (Purcellville/Loudon Valley) tied the score a few seconds later with a free throw, sending the teams into the second OT.

A jumper by Colby Heard (Virginia Beach/Tallwood)gave VWC an 84-82 lead early in the second half, before Riester hit back-to-back triples to propel the Eagles into an 88-84 lead. The door opened for UWM when VWC played nearly four minutes without scoring. The Eagles led 91-84 before rookie Brandon Mitchell (Albany, Ga./Westover)hit a triple with only 37 seconds remaining to be played.  UMW protected its lead in the final seconds with four straight free throws.

VWC struggled at the free throw lines for the second straight game, hitting only 12-of-22 attempts. Mitchell did hit 5-of-5 attempts however, en route to a season-high 12 points.  Lyons was 4-of-4.

Four Marlins scored in double figures overall as Greg Montgomery (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne) and Heard both tallied 10 points. Heard also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Morra finished with 22 points for Mary Washington, followed by Farinet with 16.
