Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- It was one of those nights when Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball Marlins couldn't get much of anything started consistently.
Unfortunately for the Marlins, it happened in quarterfinal action of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament as Virginia Wesleyan dropped a 3-0 decision to the Maroons of Roanoke College at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. VWC defeated Roanoke 3-2 during the regular season.
This time around however, Roanoke (19-10) took control and swept the match with 25-21, 25-19, 25-16 set decisions.
VWC played close in every set, but could not put down a string of points to grab momentum. The Marlins trailed 23-18 in the first set, but came back within a 23-20 score helped by rookie Madelyn McMurry (Springfield/West Springfield). Allison White (Galax/Galax) and Carrie Heldreth (Daleville/Lord Botetourt) came through with set-ending kills for Roanoke, however.
Roanoke led only 20-19 in the second set, before Sarah Long (Midlothian/Midlothian) and Macey Tyree (Daleville/Lord Botetourt) helped the Maroons to take the set with a 5-0 run.
Set three was controlled by the Maroons from the start, opening a 5-1 lead. VWC fell behind 19-12 later in the match and could not spark a rally.
