1-1 Saturday for Virginia Wesleyan at St. Mary's tri-match

ST. MARY'S, Md. -- St. Mary's College's volleyball team put together a 10-1 run late in the third game of a non-conference match Saturday to take control en route to a 25-21 match-ending decision over Virginia Wesleyan College on the Seahawks' court.

VWC fell 25-16, 25-20, 25-21 to the host team, but still posted a 1-1 after in the tri-match.  The Marlins started the day with a 25-14, 25-9, 25-11 win over Penn State University at Harrisburg.  Virginia wesleyan is now 11-7 overall, while PSU-H dropped to 4-15 and St. Mary's improved to 15-3.

Sophomore Marin Crowder (Charlottesville/Crozet Western Albemarle)was a consistent contributor in the back for the Marlins as she recorded 39 digs and six aces. She came up with 24 digs against St. Mary's, marking her seventh 20+ effort this season. Crowder recorded three aces in each match, stretching a streak of aces to nine consecutive matches.

VWC used a 14-2 run to close the first game against PSU, helped by four kills by senior Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park). The Marlins put together a 10-1 spurt midway through the second game to open up 20-8 lead.  Tiffany Barrett (Stafford/North Stafford) contributed with three kills and Kirstin Sessoms (Virginia Beach/Bayside)added two aces. Third game action saw the Marlins take a 3-0 start and never look back, leading 20-6 at one point late in the game.

Martens finished with 14 kills in the match and rookie Jessica Quinlan (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) added 10 kills. Alex Lambert (Alexandria/Hayfield)and Barrett finished with seven each. Sessoms led the match with 22 assists and Crowder led the way with 15 digs, followed by Barrett with 13.

Lambert led the Marlins against St. Mary's with 10 kills. Sessoms came through with 15 assists.

VWC returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9, hosting Bridgewater College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference competition beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
