Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Weather might have turned a little bit chilly Wednesday night, but it did little to cool off Virginia Wesleyan College's men's soccer team.
The Marlins posted an impressive 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Hampden-Sydney College's Tigers on Foster Field at The Trinder Center, remaining undefeated in its last six outings.
Virginia Wesleyan is now 11-4-1 overall and improved to 7-2 in the ODAC. The Marlins have moved into second place in the league standings heading into the final two regular season games of the season. VWC loses the regular home slate on Saturday, Oct. 26, hosting Shenandoah University's Hornets at 3:30 p.m. and travel to Ashland to face Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 4:30 p.m.
VWC played aggressively in both directions of the field Wednesday en route to posting its eighth straight win over H-SC. The Tigers (7-5-3, 4-3-2) finished with just eight shots, three in the second half, as Brandon St. Amour (Stafford/Mountain View), Brian Le (Springfield/West Springfield), and Chris Luce (Chesapeake/Oscar F. Smith) sparked a Virginia Wesleyan defense that stepped in repeatedly to stop H-SC advances toward the goal.
Hampden-Sydney spent most of the night trying to contain the Virginia Wesleyan offense, which moved the ball toward the goal from every direction. Isaac Arrington (DeSoto, Texas/Midlothian), Josh Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian), Brian Cornell (Front Royal/Warren County), and Travis Walke (Virginia Beach/Landstown) were among the Marlins who helped keep the pressure on the Tiger defense.
Virginia Wesleyan finished with a commanding 19-8 advantage in shots and scored a goal in each half. Arrington recorded the first goal of the night, in the 22nd minute, when got the angle on a hard shot from just outside the net and got the ball to ricochet off the left post. Kemp set it up with a cross from the left.
The Marlins scored again in the 82nd minute when Josh McNamara (Springfield/West Springfield) ripped a rocket shot from about 30 yards down the middle after a cross from Arrington.
Sophomore goalie Connor Kirkham (Centerville/Chantilly Westfield) recorded two saves for the Marlins. Cameron McFarlane (Norwich, Conn./South Kent) finished with six saves for the Tigers.
