Christopher Newport pins loss on Virginia Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball team played strong sets to open and close Friday's non-conference match at Christopher Newport University (CNU).

CNU dominated the second set however, and posted a 3-0 victory at the Freeman Center. The Captains (13-11) posted 25-18 decisions in the first and second sets and won 25-11 in the second.

Virginia Wesleyan (11-9) trailed just 15-14 in the opening set, but CNU used a 6-0 run to open up a 21-14 lead.  VWC never got closer than five points thereafter.

CNU led only 12-8 in the second set before pulling away with a 7-0 run to lead 19-8. VWC came back in the third set to challenge to the end, trailing just 20-17. But, the Captains outscored the Marlins 5-1 to close out the set for the match win.

Alex Lambert (Alexandria/Hayfield)led VWC with 10 kills. Kirstin Sessoms (Virgnia Beach/Bayside) contributed with 13 assists, and Mikaela Whitaker (Gainesville/Haymarket Battlefield)recorded 17 digs.  Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added 13 digs and Sessoms recorded 10 digs.

Briana Sutton led CNU with 14 digs.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Oct. 12, hosting Roanoke College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at 1 p.m.
