Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball team posted a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road win at Randolph College on Tuesday, but the host WildCats did not go down without some clawing.
Virginia Wesleyan (10-6, 4-1) led 17-11 in the fourth game and seemed to be riding momentum. Randolph (8-6, 1-5) changed all that however, as Marissa McClinton and Jordan Templin emerged with key points to help the 'Cats to pull within a 24-22 score. A VWC error made it a 24-23 game, but rookie Tiffany Barrett (Stafford/North Stafford) ripped the ball for a kill off an assist by Kirstin Sessoms (Virginia Beach/Bayside) to end the game and the match.
Virginia Wesleyan opened the match with a 25-21 win and followed with a 25-22 decision. Randolph averted the three-game sweep by posting a 25-20 win to force the fourth game.
Barrett finished with 16 kills to lead the Marlins, followed by Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) with 14 and Kelsey Caviston (Lanexa/Warhill) with 10. Sessoms finished with 25 assists and Marin Crowder (Charlottesville/Crozet Western Albemarle) recorded 21 digs. VWC finished with 81 digs overall, helpe by 13 by Barrett, 12 each by Mikeala Whitaker (Gainesville/Haymarket Battlefield) and Sessoms, and 10 by Martens.
Templin finished with 17 kills and 25 digs for Randolph. Kerry McMichael finished with 42 assists.
VWC competes again on Saturday, Oct. 5, against Penn St.-Harrisburg at St. Mary's, Maryland at 3 p.m. The Marlins will also play St. Mary's at 5 p.m.
