LEXINGTON, Va. -- One streak was snapped for Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball Marlins on Saturday, but another may have started.

The Marlins had their program-tying record of nine straight victories ended by Washington and Lee University's Generals, who posted a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory on the home court.  But, VWC (13-3, 4-1 ODAC) bounced back later in the afternoon to pin a 3-0 loss on Mary Baldwin College.

VWC came back from a 25-18 opening set loss to Washington and Lee (11-4, 5-0 ODAC) to take a 27-25 second set victory.  But, the Generals took the third set 25-17 and held off VWC 25-20 in the fourth set for the match win.

Virginia Wesleyan played the Generals close in all four sets, trailing just 22-18 in the opener after a kill by Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton) and an ace from Kerry Johnson (Richmond/J.R. Tucker).  But, kills by M.A. Boles (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and Taylor Maxey (Poway, Calif./Bishop's School) pulled out the set win for the host team.

In set two Virginia Wesleyan opened up an early lead and stayed in front, posting a 21-15 lead on a kill byMallory Slade (Burlington, N.C./Eastern Alamance).  But, the Generals came back to tie the score at 24 and 25 before a kill by Kala Guy (Fishersville/Wilson Memorial) and an Allen ace closed out the win for VWC.

Set three saw VWC take a 2-1 lead, before Washington and Lee put together a 13-4 scoring run to open up a 14-6 lead.  VWC never got closer in the set.  The General rode the momentum of that win to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set and eventually led 19-9

But, Virginia Wesleyan came on strong and outscored the Generals 11-4 to close within 23-20 score, prompting a time out by W&L head coach Bryan Snyder.  Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) , Torey Garin (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam), and Guy all had timely kills in the VWC run.  Once the teams were back in play, two errors by the Marlins closed out the win for the Generals.

Allen led VWC with 12 kills and Martens finished with 11. Guy produced 14 digs and Slade recorded 35 assists.  Allen led both teams with five aces.

Boles topped W&L with 14 kills, Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) had 14 digs, Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) recorded 38 assists, and Katie Toomb (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) added five block assists.

Virginia Wesleyan took the lead and never trailed in sets one and three against Mary Baldwin (0-9), opening up a 13-point lead in the opener and an eight point lead in the closer. In set two MBC produced an 8-5 lead and stayed in front to a 14-13 score.  But, kills by Garin and Martens gave VWC the lead for good at 16-14.  The Marlins opened up a 23-15 lead on an Allen kill and never looked back.

Allen led VWC with 10 kills and Guy contributed with 10 digs.  Slade finished with 18 assists.  Guy also had five aces and Sara Warford (Fredericksburg/Colonial Forge) added four.

Kharla Bethea (Chesapeake/Deep Creek) led MBC with eight kills, Kayla Wheeler (Fort Defiance/Fort Defiance) recorded 13 digs and Paige Babb (Goldsboro, N.C./Rosewood) contributed with 18 assists.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Tuesday, Sept. 25, hosting No. 5 ranked Christopher Newport University's Captains (13-2) at 7 p.m.
