Guy surpasses 1,000 kills as Marlins roll past Hollins

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Kala Guy produced 13 kills Friday to reach a historic milestone in her volleyball career at Virginia Wesleyan College.

The senior from Fisherville (Wilson Memorial) increased her career kills total to 1,001, marking her as only the fourth player in VWC volleyball history to hit the milestone.  She joins an elite group that includes Jen Perkinson (2003-06), Debbie Sterne (2006-09), and Rebecca Leedomn (2007-09).

Guys' effort was a highlight of a 3-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over Hollins University ... the Marlins' sixth consecutive victory.

But, it did not start off well.

The Marlins committed 13 errors in the opening set, including five service errors, but returned to the court at the Jane P. Batten Student Center to take control of the match.

Hollins (3-6, 0-1) stayed within a 19-17 score helped by the Marlins' errors, only to see Virginia Wesleyan (9-2, 2-0) come back behind Kerry Johnson (Richmond/J.R. Tucker), Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton), and Kala Guy to outscore Hollins 6-2 to take a 25-19 victory.  The Marlins opened up a 24-18 lead en route to the win.

Hollins made things interesting in the second game at Lauren Hays (Saginaw, Texas/Boswell) and Ally Reed (Sterling/Dominion) helped steer the team to a 9-5 lead.  But, a Guy kill and an ace, followed by key play at the net from  Torey Garin (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) and Johnson sparked the Marlins on a run that opened up a 16-9 lead.  Hollins never got closer than six points the rest of the game, which resulted in a 25-14 VWC win.

Game three started with a Hollins lead due in part to the play of Haley Ortiz (Chesapeake/Western Branch) and Hays, but it did not stick.  After a 3-3 tie, Allen served back-to-back aces to give the Marlins the lead and VWC never trailed again.  The Marlins led 20-8 and finished the match with a 25-16 victory.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Sept. 15, hosting Roanoke College's Maroons (7-5, 1-2) at 11 a.m.
