Three-run innings help R-MC pull away from Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets used a pair of three-run innings to open up a lead en route to a 10-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over the host Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College on Tuesday.

Virginia Wesleyan (5-17, 1-8) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Buddy Lawson (Virginia Beach/First Colonial) led off the frame with a single.  He moved to second on a single by Matt Ittner (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox), and scored with two outs on a grounder from Josh Horn (Virginia Beach/Bayside).

But, the lead was short lived however, as Randolph-Macon (14-12, 7-4) came back in the top of the third to post a trio of runs, helped by five hits.  Jeb Weymouth (Rockville, Va./Hanover) belted a double in the mix of Jacket hits.

VWC tighted the score with a solo run in the bottom of the same inning, helped by singles from Alex Lambert (Virginia Beach/Ocean Lakes) and Anthony Siracusa (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn).  Siracusa's hit scoredJosh Miller (Norfolk, Va./Chesapeake Greenbrier Christian Academy), who reached base earlier on an R-MC error.

The 3-2 score remained into the fifth inning when the Jackets tacked on a pair of runs and started to pull away with a three-run sixth.  VWC answered with a pair of runs in the sixth, but managed just one run in the final three innings.

The teams combined for 30 hits overall, with R-MC connected for 19.  R-MC left 17 batters stranded, VWC left 14.

Pike Brynildsen (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), Siracusa and Ittner all paced VWC's offense with a pair of hits each.  Weymouth topped R-MC batters with a 5-of-5 showing at the plate.

Six VWC pitchers saw time on the mound, beginning with Alex Tucci (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic), who faced 16 batters, struck out two, walked one, and allowed eight hits and three earned runs. Ryan Brinkley (Virginia Beach/Tallwood) was the third pitcher in for the Marlins and struck out a trio of batters.  He walked three and gave up three hits.

Jake Bram took the pitching win for R-MC, which used four pitchers overall.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, April 7, in an ODAC doubleheader at Emory & Henry College beginning at noon.
