Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lynchburg College's Hornets, ranked No. 3 nationally, scored the first six goals of Saturday's game against the host Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins and rode the cushion the rest of the way to a 17-6 victory.
Playing in front of large Senior Night crowd on Foster Field at the Trinder Center, the Marlins (9-6, 3-4 ODAC) did not find an answer to the Lynchburg start until the final five minutes of the first quarter. Junior Andrew Adamson (Marriottsville, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph) fired in VWC's first goal off a feed from Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River).
Virginia Wesleyan scored three of the next five goals, two by Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) and another by Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County), to pull the Marlins within an 8-4 score by the end of the first quarter.
But, Lynchburg (15-1, 7-0 ODAC) pulled away for good by out-scoring the Marlins 4-0 in the second quarter, led by Ben Sauer (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) with two goals.
Lynchburg out-shot VWC 48-35, but Virginia Wesleyan held a slim edge in ground balls, 37-36.
Pappetti led VWC scoring with two goals. Five Marlins scored goals overall and five added assists. Dylan Hoff (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) led Lynchburg scoring with four goals.
Junior goalie Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) turned in a strong effort in the net for VWC, recording 17 saves. Franc Cook (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) started in goal for Lynchburg and finished with 15 saves.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, April 25, in the ODAC championship tournament quarterfinals. The Marlins will face the host Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College at a time to be announced.
