Balanced effort guides Marlins to victory at Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. --Travis Puls scored two goals and recorded three assists Saturday to help lead Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse team to a 10-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the host Generals of Washintgon and Lee University.

Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph) scored his goals in the second and fourth quarters to help Virginia Wesleyan (9-5, 3-3 ODAC) pad its lead.  The Marlins stunned the Generals (6-8, 2-4) with a four-goal opening period and scored at least one in every quarter thereafter.

Sophomore Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River), senior Adam Nycz (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois), and rookie Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County) all scored goals for the Marlins in the first 11 minutes for a 3-0 start.  Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) put the Generals on the scoreboard with a goal, but the Marlins closed the period with a score when Pappas hit again, with 57 seconds remaining, set up by Puls.

Virginia Wesleyan never lost momentum, building a 6-1 lead before Washington and Lee scored again.  The Marlins led 7-2 at halftime.

Washington and Lee came back briefly in the third quarter to outscore the Marlins 2-1, but Virginia Wesleyan repadded its lead by outscoring the Generals 2-1 in the final quarter.  Puls and rookie Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored for VWC.

Puls, Nycz and Pappas all scored two runs each for the Marlins.  Kyle Wright (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Mike Tibbs (Baltimore, Md./Pasadena Northeast) scored a goal each.  

Dabir led Washington and Lee with two goals.

Junior goalie Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) turned in a standout effort for the Marlins, recording 16 saves.  Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) recorded 15 saves for the Generals.

Virginia Wesleyan closes the regular season on Saturday, April 21, hosting #3 Lynchburg College in an ODAC game beginning at 7 p.m.
