Pappas prolific, but Roanoke routs Marlins

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Sophomore attack Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) scored a game-high seven goals to highlight an otherwise tough day for Virginia Wesleyan Saturday as the Marlins dropped a 21-10 decision to Roanoke.

Roanoke, which is ranked 13th nationally in the latest Division III poll by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, scored 20 goals for the second time in three games. The victory was the Maroons' third straight and improved their record to 7-3 and 2-1 in the ODAC. The Marlins, who had won two straight going in, fell to 6-4 and 2-2 in conference play.

The Maroons controlled play throughout, rolling up a nine-goal advantage at halftime and seizing an 18-4 advantage after three quarters. Roanoke outshot Virginia Wesleyan 48-33 and enjoyed a 61-45 edge in groundballs. Joey Coretti scored six goals for the second straight game to pace the Maroons.

The Marlins will begin a stretch of four straight road games on Thursday at Christopher Newport.
