Box Score DANVILLE, Va. - Alex Tucci (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) and Anthony Siracusa (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) combined on a six-hitter and Nathan Chamberlain (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) drove in a pair of runs as Virginia Wesleyan held off Averett 3-2 Wednesday for the Marlins' third victory in four games.
Tucci scattered five hits in seven innings and allowed only one unearned run while striking out six. Siracusa came on in the eighth and retired six of the seven batters he faced to pick up his first save of the season.
Josh Miller (Norfolk, Va./Greenbrier Christian) had three hits and Chamberlain added RBI singles and doubles the Marlins (5-10), who banged out 13 hits and continually threatened to break the game open. But the Marlins also left 13 men on base.
Trailing 1-0 through four innings, the Marlins struck for two runs in the fifth. Pike Brynildsen (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on Lambert's single ands scored on a botched pickoff attempt. Lambert then scored on Chamberlain's two-out single.
The Marlins made it 3-1 in the seventh when Lambert led off the inning with a single and Chamberlain stroked an RBI double. Averett (17-11) got a run back in its half of the seventh, but Tucci escaped further damage before turning the ball over to Siracusa.
Virginia Wesleyan will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Lynchburg.
