Marlins season ends with quarterfinal loss at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Momentum started with Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball Marlins on Wednesday, but finished with Lynchburg College's Hornets.

The host Hornets (23-9) bounced back from a 25-23 loss to the Marlins (19-12) in the opening set of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinal match to win three straight sets, 29-27, 25-22 and 25-18.

Seniors Kala Guy (Fishersville/Wilson Memorial) and Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton) put down 14 kills each to lead VWC.  Senior Kerry Johnson (Richmond/J.R. Tucker) and rookie Marin Crowder (Charlottesville/Crozet Western Albemarle) came through with 16 and 14 digs, respectively.  Sophomore Mallory Slade (Burlington, N.C./Eastern Alamance) contributed 32 assists for the Marlins. She finished the season with 878 assists, the fifth highest total in Virginia Wesleyan history.

Aricquel Payne (Woodbridge/Osbourn Park) led Lynchburg with 22 kills. Molly Deacon (Roanoke/Northside) contributed 19 digs.
