Error-plagued night dooms Marlins against R-MC

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH -- It was a night when matters didn't start off well for the Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball team and stayed that way.

Errors plagued the Marlins from the start and hampered them throughout an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match against league-leading Randolph-Macon College.  The end result was a 3-0 victory for the visiting Yellow Jackets.

One of the largest crowds in VWC volleyball history turned out at The Batten Center to watch the ODAC showdown, only to see the Jackets (19-5, 10-0) take advantage of errors by the Marlins (19-7, 8-3) to start each set.  R-MC was able to stay a step ahead the rest of the way, posting 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 set wins.

The Marlins ignited brief runs in each set to keep things competitive, but untimely errors stopped rallies before VWC could overtake the lead.

Senior Kala Guy (Fishersville/Wilson Memorial) put down nine kills to lead Virginia Wesleyan and junior Tempe Martens (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) added eight. Sophomore Marin Crowder (Charlottesville/Crozet Western Albemarle) and Guy recorded 11 digs each and Kirstin Sessoms (Virginia Beach/Bayside) posted 15 assists.

Senior Mallory Carter (Moseley/Cosby) led R-MC with 14 kills.  Marli Dabareiner (Hardy/ North Cross) added 17 digs for the Jackets and Riley Martin (Crozet/Western Albemarle) contributed 17 assists.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Friday, Oct. 26 in the Christopher Newport Invitational  The Marlins take on Averett University at 5 p.m. and Pennsylvania's Moravian College at 7:30 p.m.
