Guy becomes VWC's all-time kills leader

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Senior Kala Guy (Fishersville/Wilson Memorial) put down eight kills Wednesday against Bridgewater College to become the all-time leader in Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball history.

That was the positive for the Marlins in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference match against the Eagles.

The negative was the fact that the Marlins fell 3-0.  Bridgewater outlasted VWC 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 as the Eagles (12-10, 6-1) won their fifth consecutive match and fourth straight 3-0 decision.

Virginia Wesleyan (15-6, 5-2) was led by Guy and Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton) with eight kills each.  The kills increased Guy's career total to 1123, breaking the former record of 1118 set by Jen Perkinson (2003-06).

Game one included eight ties before the Eagles picked up three straight points to take the lead for good at 18-15. The Marlins pulled within two points several times down the stretch, but could not pull ahead.

The second game included three early ties, but Bridgewater pulled ahead 9-6 and never looked back.  Three consecutive points helped Virginia Wesleyan pulled within an 18-17 score before Bridgewater responded with a run to create a 22-17 lead that catapulted the Eagles to the win.

Virginia Wesleyan led 12-11 in game three, but the Eagles came back with a 6-1 run to pull ahead for good. The Marlins made one final charge to pull within a 21-20 score, but Bridgewater held on to take the game win and the match.

Mallory Slade (Burlington, N.C./Eastern Alamance) contributed 24 assists and eight digs for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action in a doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 13.  The Marlins host Randolph College in an ODAC match at 1 p.m. and takes on St. Mary's College of Maryland in a non-conference contest at 5 p.m., both in the Batten Center.
