Nycz, Puls score nine goals as VWC rolls past CNU

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse Marlins got off to a strong start Wednesday and never let up, rolling to a 16-6 non-conference victory over Christopher Newport University's Captains on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

Juniors Adam Nycz (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) and Travis Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph) emerged as a two-man wrecking crew for the Marlins (6-5), combining for nine goals and six assists.  Nycz led that effort with five goals and four assits for nine points, tying the fourth highest point total in VWC history.

Virginia Wesleyan led 2-0 after the first six minutes and never trailed.  The Marlins finished the quarter with a 5-2 lead, but the Captains (5-5) closed within two goals when Billy Crist (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored the first goal of the second quarter.

That was as close as it would get for the Captains however, as Virginia Wesleyan reeled off 10 straight goals to bust open a 15-3 lead with 14:36 remaining in the fourth quarter.  Nycz scored all five of his goals in that decisive run, which include two goals from junior Mike Tibbs (Baltimore, Md./Northeast).

CNU scored three goals in a row after that run, but it too little too late.  VWC senior Curran Lee (Calgary, Alberta/Delta West) capped the scoring with an unassited goal with 4:46 on the clock.

Sophomore Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) helped the VWC cause by winning 14-of-22 faceoffs and scooping up nine ground balls.

Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Saturday, Apr. 9, hosting Ferrum College at 1 p.m. at the Trinder Center.
