LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Brandon Kirklin scored an unassisted goal to pull Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team within a 3-2 score at Lynchburg College on Saturday. (Box score)
Kirklin (Denver, Colo./Littleton) scored with 11:18 showing on the clock in the first half, but, the remainder of the half, and most of the second half, was dominated by the host Hornets who posted a 19-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win.
The Hornets (11-5, 5-2) scored four consecutive goals to open up a 7-2 lead in the second half, before Ryan McArthur (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) put a shot into the net for Virginia Wesleyan (8-7, 3-4).
That was as close as it would get for the visiting Marlins however, as Lynchburg reeled off 10 straight goals to enter the fourth quarter with a 17-4 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan dominated in the last quarter, outscoring the Hornets 3-2, but it only dented the Lynchburg lead.
VWC helped itself in the final quarter by launching 20 shots en route to finishing with 36 overall. Lynchburg recorded 41 shots. The Hornets also posted a 44-31 advantage in ground balls and won 18-of-29 face-off battles.
Six Marlins scored a goal each and two recorded an assist each. Max Voumard (Cape May, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) led Lynchburg with four goals.
Tyler Keech (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), Jimmy McGinnis (Berwyn Heights, Md./Washington D.C. Gonzaga), Quinn Magner (Chevy Chase, Md./Blue Ridge, Va.) and Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic)all shared time in front of the goal for VWC. Bauer recorded six saves and Keech added five.
