Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford College's Quakers pounded out 21 hits in the second game of Saturday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan College to post a stunning 18-6 victory that capped a sweep of the Marlins. (Box Game 1) (Box Game 2)
The Quakers (14-16, 7-5) held off the Marlins (12-18, 6-7) for a 5-3 victory in the first game at McBane Field and then produced seven-run innings in the fourth and sixth in the second contest to pull away for the second victory.
Virginia Wesleyan knocked out 16 hits in the two games, led by Shayne Paskanik (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) who belted a double in each game, increasing his season total to 12. Jacob Pierce (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), who was 3-for-7 at the plate, also knocked out a double, increasing his team-leading total to 17. Gage Collins (Newport News, Va./Menchville) and Tyler Reed (Petersburg, Va./Matoaca) both added a double in the second game.
Senior Alex DeJesus (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) started for the Marlins on the mound in the first game, before Mike Wiley (Virginia Beach/Bayside) and Ried Hoffler (Chesapeake, Va./Suffolk Nansemond River) entered in relief. The trio struck out three batters, walked four and allowed three earned runs.
Eric Backus (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) posted the pitching win and Sammy Stuart (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor) picked up the save. Kyle Wooden (Monroe, N.C./Sun Valley) led the Quakers at the plate with two hits, including a two-run homer in the second inning that gave Guilford a 4-0 lead.
Josh Miller (Norfolk, Va./Chesapeake Greenbrier Christian) started on the mound for VWC in the second game and worked 3.1 innings. Jeremy Hagwood (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland), Jake Settle (Richmond, Va./Home schooled), Lee Cranford (Orlean, Va./Fauquier) and Ty Tweedy (Yorktown, Va./Chesapeake Greenbrier Christian) all followed him. The group struck out five batters, walked four and gave up 12 earned runs.
Borja Jones-Berasaluce (Newton, Mass./North) recorded the victory for Guilford, working seven innings. Wooden was once again the offensive leader for the Quakers, going 4-for-6 at the palte, with a double. D.J. Phillips (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood) homered for Guilford.
Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Apr. 6, hosting Methodist University at 3 p.m. at Marlins Field.
