Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's baseball Marlins came out strong in Game One against the host Generals of Washington & Lee University on Sunday and posted a 7-4 victory at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. (Game One) (Game Two)
But, while the offense was there for the Marlins in the opener, it was scattered in the second game as the Generals pulled out a 2-0 decision in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader, the regular season finale for both teams.
Virginia Wesleyan (16-21, 9-9) jumped on the Generals (15-13, 12-6) for two runs in the first inning of the opener, as Jacob Pierce (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) and Cameron Butler (Virginia Beach/Landstown) belted RBI singles.
That score remained in place until the top of the fifth when the Marlins pulled away with a four-run surge. The inning started with four consecutive walks for VWC and was helped along by two passed balls, a W&L error and singles from Josh Miller (Norfolk, Va./Greenbrier Christian) and Gage Collins (Newport News, Va./Menchville). Butler added to it all with an RBI sacrifice fly ball to center field.
VWC tacked on a seventh run in the sixth when Shayne Paskanik (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) ripped a double that scored Myles Shipp (Virginia Beach/First Colonial), who doubled in front of him.
Washington & Lee scored all four of its runs in the final five innnings.
Senior Alex DeJesus (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor) picked up the pitching win and rookie Reid Hoffler (Chesapeake, Va./Suffolk Nansemond River) recorded the save for the Marlins. W&L used four pitchers, with Ian Shaw absorbing the loss.
Paskanik led VWC hitting in the game with a pair of doubles. Sophomore Pike Brynildsen (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) also hit a double. Miller added two singles.
That kind of hitting eluded the Marlins in the second game however, with the exception of junior Mitch Green (Cordova, Md./St. Michael's).He posted a 4-for-4 effort, all singles, to lead VWC's six hit attack.
Washington & Lee connected for eight hits. The Generals scored a run in the second inning, on three hits, and added another run in the sixth, on two hits.
