Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- That forecast rain failed to materialize during Virginia Wesleyan College's baseball game with Randolph-Macon College, but so did a win for the host Marlins. (Box score)
Randolph-Macon produced five run in the final three innings to take a lead away from the host Marlins and post a 6-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory at Marlins Field.
Randolph-Macon (16-16, 10-6), which lost 9-7 to VWC in the first meeting between the teams in March, used a pair of walks and a single from Peter Culver (Burnpass, Va./Louisa) to get the scoring in place. The go-ahead blast came from Jordan Walton (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis), a two run single to right center, pushing the Yellow Jackets in front 3-2.
Virginia Wesleyan could not get anything started in the bottom of the inning, but came back in the top of the eighth to keep the Jackets threatless. The Marlins rode that momentum into the bottom of the eight and got a single from Shayne Paskanik (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge). VWC followed with two outstanding shots from Mitch Green (Cordova, Md./St. Michaels) and Cam Butler (Virginia Beach/Landstown), but saw them both end up in equally outstanding catches by R-MC outfielders.
R-MC put the game away with a three-run ninth, with the help of three hits and three walks. VWC managed only a walk in the bottom of the inning.
Both teams produced eight hits. VWC was led by Paskanik, who stretched a current hitting streak to six games. He recorded two hits, as did Green. Brian Jordan (Columbia, Va./Goochland), Jay Lichter (Richmond, Va./Varina), and Walton had two hits each for R-MC.
VWC used five pitchers overall, starting with Alex Dejesus (Norfolk, Va./Lake Taylor), who faced 27 batters in a little more than six innings. He struck out one, walked four and allowed five hits and two earned runs.
Kyle Hicks (Goochland, Va./Goochland) took the win for R-MC, pitching a complete game. He struck out two, walked four, and gave up eight hits and two earned runs.
Virginia Wesleyan plays again on Thursday, Apr. 14, in a non-conference game at Newport News Apprentice School beginning at 4 p.m. The Marlins close the regular season in an important ODAC doubleheader at Washington & Lee University on Saturday, Apr. 16. Competition begins at 12 p.m.
