Scoreless third proves costly for Virginia Wesleyan

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Host McDaniel College scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter on Saturday to help pull out a 9-6 non-conference victory over the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-3) led 2-1 after one quarter, but fell behind 5-3 at halftime.  McDaniels' Green Terror scored five consecutive goals to open up an 8-3 lead, including three from Ben Yancheski (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), before the Marlins responded.

VWC ame on strong in the fourth quarter, led by two goals from Travis Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph), but could not score enough to cover the deficit.

Puls finished with three goals to lead Virginia Wesleyan, which also received solo goals from Adam Nycz (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois), Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Brock Waddell (Windsor, Colo./Fossil Ridge).  Nycz led the Marlins with a pair of assists.

Yancheski and Nicholas DiBernardo (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) led McDaniel (1-2) with three goals each.

McDaniel finished with slim statistical advantages, including 35-32 in shots and 34-27 in ground balls.  Mike Tibbs led the Marlins with six grounders.

Senior goalie Tyler Keech (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) finished with 11 saves for VWC.  Brad Motley (Fallston, Md./Fallston) also recorded 11 saves for McDaniel.

Virginia Wesleyan plays again on Wednesday, Mar. 9, hosting DeSales University at 7 p.m. on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
