Balanced offense steers Marlins to win over Randolph

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's men's lacrosse team jumped to a 3-0 first-quarter lead Wednesday and never looked back as the Marlins rolled to a 12-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Randolph College's WildCats.

Ian Shankland (Hampstead, N.C./John T. Hoggard) scored twice in the first quarter and Nick Northern (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge) scored once, all unassisted goals, to give the Marlins (5-4, 2-1) the 3-0 start.

Adam Nycz (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) scored twice in the next five minutes, and Northern added a second goal, as the Marlin pushed in front 6-0 with 10:44 remaining in the second quarter.  VWC went on to build an 8-1 lead by halftime and tacked on four more goals in the third quarter.

Cam Garrison (Plymouth, Ind./Culver Military) scored the lone goal for the WildCats (1-7, 0-2) with 5:43 remaining in the second quarter.

Virginia Wesleyan fired 59 shots at the goal and Kevin McCracken (Annandale, Va./Annandale) recorded 15 saves.  Senior Tyler Keech (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) protected VWC's goal for three quarters and recorded seven saves.  Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) took over for the final quarter and recorded two saves.

Shankland, Nycz and Northern all finished with three goals each for the Marlins.  Travis Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph), Andrew Adamson (Marriottsville, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) and Nick Pappas (Edgewater, Md./South River) scored a goal each for VWC.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Apr. 2, traveling to Salem, Va., to face No. 9 ranked Roanoke College at 2 p.m. in ODAC competition.
