Overtime goal trips Marlins at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- GregNash fired a hard shot from 12 yards out on the left just 1:29 into overtime Saturday to lift the Guilford College Quakers to a 7-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the visiting Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College.

Nash (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) got off the shot against the VWC defense shortly after the Quakers (7-3, 2-1) won the face-off and called a time out to draw up the winning play.

It was the third one-goal loss of the season for Virginia Wesleyan (4-4, 1-1), which took a 6-5 lead with 1:47 remaining in regulation play when junior Kyle Wright (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scored an unassisted goal.

But, the Quakers beat the clock to score and force overtime when Chris Sisk (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) got a shot into the net, set up by a pass from Nick Mann (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic).

Virginia Wesleyan led several times during the contest, 2-1 and 3-2 in the first quarter, before three consecutive Guilford goals pushed the Quakers into a 5-3 advantage.

But, VWC came right back with three straight goals, as Adam Nycz (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) and Kevin Topper (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty) scored to tie the game, before Wright put the Marlins in front at 6-5.

Nycz led VWC with three goals overall.  Nash and Henry Farley (Decatur, Ga./Decatur) led Guilford with two each.

Virginia Wesleyan finished with a 39-26 advantage in shots and won nine of the 16 face-offs.  Both teams picked up 26 ground balls.

VWC goalie Tyler Keech (Eldersburg, Va./Liberty)posted 11 saves for the Marlins, while Mark Guillen (Asburn, N.C./Broad Run) recorded 15 stops for Guilford.

Virginia Wesleyan will play again on Wednesday, Mar. 30, when the Marlins host Randolph College in a 7 p.m. ODAC game at the Trinder Center.
