Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Virginia Wesleyan College's baseball Marlins trailed just 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning in Tuesday's non-conference game at Methodist University.
That all changed quickly however, as the host Monarchs rapped out five hits en route to seven runs in the bottom of the inning en route to a 9-1 victory.
The Monarchs (15-7) scored just one run in the inning when a double play seemed to be taking VWC (7-13) out of a tough situation. But, Methodist continued to bring in the runs with the combination of five walks and two singles.
Virginia Wesleyan averted the shutout in the top of the ninth when Jacob Pierce and Mike McCutcheon kept things alive with a pair of singles. Two outs later Josh Miller came through with another single, scoring Pierce to put the Marlins on the scoreboard.
Overall, VWC outhit Methodist 10-9, led by Brett Sutryk with a double and single. Pierce, McCutcheon and Miller all added two singles each.
The Marlins used four pitchers overall, including starter Jake Settle who worked through six innings. He walked two batters, allowed six hits and gave up four earned runs.
Virginia Wesleyan compete again on Wednesday, Mar. 16, when the Marlins travel to Ashland, Va. to face Old Dominion Athletic Conference leading Randolph-Macon College at 3 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are currently 6-0 in the league and 10-6 overall.
