H-SC upsets No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan in foul fest

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College's Tigers came out on the better end of a foul-fest Saturday that ended with No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan College falling for just the second time this season.

The Marlins (20-2, 11-2) dropped an 80-71 decision on the H-SC court, where four Marlins fouled out and two more were saddled with four fouls.  Thirty-one fouls where called against VWC, while 23 were whistled against the Tigers (14-8, 6-7), who lost only one player to foul disqualification.

H-SC marched to the free throw lines 40 times and connected for 29 points, led by Randall Ward (Richmond, Va./John Marshall) with a 9-of-10 showing.  He scored 17 points overall.  Virginia Wesleyan connected on 16-of-24 freebies, led by Chris Astorga (Suffolk, Va./Virginia Beach Cape Henry) and Ed Roberts (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) with four each.

Fouls wiped out VWC's interior attack as juniorDonald Vaughn (Woodbridge, Va./Dumfries Potomac), Ali Brown (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan), Rakeem Davis (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek)and Astorga all took a seat on the bench via fouls.  Vaughn, the Marlins' leading rebounder and one of the top scorers, played a total of 16 minutes and managed just one field goal attempt. 

H-SC, which hit 11-of-13 free throws in the final 3:52, led by as many as 13 points in the first half, before VWC rallied to pull within a 35-31 score at halftime.  The Marlins tied the game at 50 on a jumper by Chris Teasley (Newport News, Va./Menchville) with 11:20 remaining to be played, but could not grab the lead.

H-SC ignited an 11-0 run to push in front 61-50 with 6:32 on the clock.  Rookie DJ Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) and Teasley scored to pull VWC within seven, but the Tigers we able to prevent any Marlin scoring runs down the stretch.

Teasley led VWC with 17 points, hitting 7-of-12 field goals.  Woodmore and Astorga added 15 points each and Roberts tallied 10.  VWC failed to help itself from three-point range as the Marlins launched 23 triples and hit only five.

Harrison George (Raliegh, N.C./Leesville) led H-SC with 22 points, hitting 8-of-14 field goal attempts.  Ru White (Chesterfield, Va./L.C. Bird) added 16 points and Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, Kan./Leavenworth) tallied 11. 

Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Monday, Feb. 14, visiting Eastern Mennonite University for a 7 p.m. start.
