Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH -- Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball Marlins pushed No. 8 Christopher Newport University throughout Wednesday's non-conference match at the Jane P. Batten Student Center, but the visiting Captains pulled out a 3-1 victory.
CNU (28-4) posted a 25-21 decision in the first game and pulled away for a 25-18 win in the second game. But, Virginia Wesleyan (12-15) came back strong to take a 25-18 win in the third game, before falling 25-20 in the fourth.
Kala Guy (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) emerged with 13 kills and 14 digs for the Marlins, who also received 21 digs from seniorErin Paton (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch). Paton and Guy also recorded two aces each for the Marlins, who finished with seven. Allie Bal (Bogota, N.J./Bogota) posted 18 assists.
Chelsea McClure (Montclair, Va./Forest Park) and Bailey Jensey (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) paced the Captains with 12 kills each. Kara Elder (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) added 10. Jessie Heavenrich (Cambria, Calif./James River, Va.) contributed with 29 assists and McClure led in digs with 14.
Virginia Wesleyan closes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29, playing in a triangular match at Salisbury University (27-3) in Maryland. The Marlins face Frostburg State University (15-17) at 1 p.m. and the host SeaGulls at 3 p.m.
