Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- An error-filled night turned out to be a quick night in North Carolina for the Virginia Wesleyan College volleyball Marlins.
The Marlins committed 18 errors in a non-conference match against the host Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College en route to dropping a 3-0 decision, 25-18, 25-15, 25-23. It marked VWC's first loss to NCWC since 2005 and only it's second to the Bishops since the series began in 2003.
VWC (4-2) simply never got started against the Bishops (1-3), who used an early run to take control of the first set. Aided by VWC mistakes, NCWC pushed out to a 21-10 lead before the Marlins began to settle down. Virginia Wesleyan pulled within a 21-16 score and closed in at 22-18, but the Bishops came up with the points needed to take the win.
The second set was more of the same as the Bishops broke away from a 7-6 score with a 5-0 run and then pushed out to a 20-12 lead. VWC led throughout much of the third set, but errors proved costly once again as the host Bishops stayed close and outscored the Marlins down the stretch to close out the match.
Taylor Allen (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) and Alex Kirk (Concord, N.C./Concord) paced the Marlins with nine kills each. Lindsey Spears (Virginia Beach/Ocean Lakes) recorded nine digs.
