No. 3 Marlins move to 10-0 with win at Shenandoah

Box Score

WINCHESTER, Va. -- Eighteen players took the court Saturday for Virginia Wesleyan College's No. 3-ranked Marlins, 12 scored and all contributed in some way to a decisive 76-48 victory over the host Hornets of Shenandoah University. (Box score)

Sophomore Chris Teasley (Newport News, Va./Menchville)started the scoring in the game with a triple and the Marlins continued to roll to an 11-0 lead, before Shenandoah (1-7) hit the scoreboard with a jumper by Mitch Dudley (Alexandria, Va./Centreville) 6:14 into the competition.

Shenandoah, a soon-to-be-member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, missed its first seven shots and turned the ball over four times against a harassing Virginia Wesleyan defense.  Dudley's basket stopped the Marlins' run, but did not switch momentum as  VWC (10-0) outscored the Hornets 14-2 in a little more than three minutes to open up a 25-4 lead on a jumper by junior Donald Vaughn (Woodbridge, Va./Dumfries Potomac).

Virginia Wesleyan head coach David Macedo utilized the Marlins' deep bench throughout the game, and VWC maintained a healthy lead to the final buzzed.  The first half scoring ended the same way it started, with Teasley nailing a triple, giving VWC a 42-18 lead at halftime.

Virginia Wesleyan outscored Shenandoah 20-10 in the first nine minutes of the second half, opening up a 62-28 advantage, the largest lead of the game for the Marlins.  Scoring by Brandon Bryan (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) helped pull the Hornets within a 67-45 score with 3:34 on the clock, but that was as close as it would get for the host team.

Vaughn led Virginia Wesleyan scoring with 18 points, hitting 8-of-12 field goal attempts.  He also posted a team-leading 11 rebounds, blocked two shots and recorded four steals.  Teasley finished with 13 points and sophomoreTre' Ford (Falls Church, Va./J.E.B. Stuart) and rookie DJ Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) added nine points each.

Dudley paced Shenandoah with 20 points and 15 rebounds.  Bryan finished with 12 points.

Virginia Wesleyan closes out the 2010 portion of its schedule on Friday, Dec. 17, hosting North Carolina Wesleyan College in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. at the Jane P. Batten Student Center.
