Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Bus problems that hindered the ride of Virginia Wesleyan College's volleyball team to Lynchburg College on Tuesday didn't seem to bother the Marlins once they stepped onto the court.
The Old Dominion Athletic Conference match start time was pushed back about an hour, and it was about an hour later that the Marlins were back on the bus heading back to Virginia Beach with an impressive 3-0 victory. VWC maintained its position among the ODAC front runners with a 29-27, 25-19, 25-15 victory.
VWC's victory was its eighth in the 11-game series with Lynchburg, one that began in 2003. The Marlins improved to 5-1 in the ODAC, and to 14-7 overall, while the host Hornets dropped 4-2 in the league and to 11-8 overall.
Virginia Wesleyan set the tone of the match by outlasting the Hornets in a 29-27 thriller to open the competition. That momentum kept the Marlins in command the rest of the match, owning tempo from start-to-finish.
Sophomore Kala Guy (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) played a major role in the Marlins' win, knocking down a match-high 14 kills. She also recorded 12 digs for VWC and a pair of block assists. Senior Lauren Gaca (Virginia Beach/Princess Anne)added six kills fo VWC, senior Marissa Wood (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) posted 25 assists, seven digs and two block assists, and junior Erin Paton (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) added a match-high 19 digs.
Virginia Wesleyan helped itself with 10 aces, led by rookie Mikaela Whitaker (Gainesville, Va./Haymarket Battlefield) and Wood with three each.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Tuesday, Oct. 19, playing at Sweet Briar College in an ODAC match beginning at 6:30 p.m.
