The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (8-0) went 2-0 today with a 13-3 win over Muhlenberg and a 7-1 win over Greensboro.
Game One:
Taylor Mcqueen was 3-for-3 with two homers, for four RBI. Morgan Tucker was 1-for-2 with a double, scored two runs, and had two RBI. Alison Pollack was 1-for-2 at bat with a home run, scored one run, and had two RBI.
Emma Adams started and got the win in the circle, pitched 3.0 innings, allowed one hit, and had five strikeouts. Savannah Ballou came in relief and pitched 2.0 innings, allowed six hits, three earned runs, and teammate Emma Orr pitched 2.0 innings to finish the game and allowed one hit, and had one strikeout.
Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, erupting for six runs in the top of the first inning. Laci Campbell started the rally with a single and stole second before Samantha Deitsch drew a walk. Morgan Tucker then doubled up the middle to bring home both runners. Moments later, Taylor McQueen launched a two-run home run to left center to extend the lead to 4-0. After Olivia Knight reached base, Alison Pollack blasted a two-run homer to center field to cap the explosive inning and give the Marlins a 6-0 advantage.
The Marlins added another run in the second inning when Deitsch connected on a solo home run to center field, pushing the lead to 7-0.
Virginia Wesleyan continued to build on the lead in the fourth. Tucker worked a walk before McQueen struck again, sending her second home run of the game over the left-field fence for two more runs. Later in the inning, Cali Megaro came home on a passed ball to give the Marlins a commanding 10-0 lead.
Muhlenberg responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth to cut the deficit to 10-3, but the Marlins answered in the seventh to put the game away. Reese Penny started the rally with a walk before Courtney Cole doubled to left center. Riley Curtice followed with an RBI single, and a throwing error allowed another run to score. Emma Orr later delivered an RBI single to plate the final run of the game and seal the 13-3 victory.
McQueen led the Marlins at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Tucker added a double and two RBI, while Deitsch and Pollack each homered in the victory.
In the circle, Emma Adams earned the win after striking out five batters over three scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. Savannah Ballou and Emma Orr combined to finish the game in relief.
Game Two:
Hannah Hearl was lights out in the circle as she pitched 5.0 innings, allowed one hit, one run, and tallied 11 strikeouts.
Emma Adams came in relief and pitched 2.0 innings allowed zero hits, zero runs, and had one strikeout.
Olivia Knight led the offense going 2-for-4 with two doubles, for four RBI.
Morgan Tucker was 2-for-3 with a home run, and score three runs.
Samantha Deitsch was 1-for-3 at bat with a double, and two RBI.
The Marlins jumped on the board early in the bottom of the first inning. Laci Campbell reached after being hit by a pitch and quickly moved into scoring position with a stolen base. After Samantha Deitsch lifted a fly ball that allowed Campbell to advance to third, Morgan Tucker worked a walk and stole second to place two runners in scoring position. Olivia Knight delivered the big hit of the inning, lining a double to right center that brought both runners home and gave Virginia Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan broke the game open in the second inning with a four-run frame. Sarah Prosser started the rally with a double to left center before Campbell followed with a single. Campbell later stole second, and Deitsch drove both runners in with a double to right field. Morgan Tucker kept the offense rolling with a single and advanced into scoring position on a pair of wild pitches. Taylor McQueen then drew a walk before Knight came through again, delivering another two-run double to right center to push the Marlins' lead to 6-0.
Greensboro got on the board in the top of the third when Anna Frazier connected on a solo home run to left center, trimming the lead to 6-1.
The Marlins answered immediately in the bottom half of the fourth. Tucker led off the inning by blasting a solo home run to center field, extending the Virginia Wesleyan advantage to 7-1.
Neither team scored over the final three innings as the Marlins secured the victory.
