The No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (18-0, 2-0 ODAC) defeated Eastern Mennonite 10-0 in game one and 12-0 in game two.
Before the start of the game, the Virginia Wesleyan University softball program honored its eight-member senior class, which included
Karley Beltran,
Haley Sadler,
Alison Pollack,
Laci Campbell,
Sarah Prosser,
Olivia Knight,
Mackenzie Swanson, and
Emma Adams.
Game One:
Samantha Deitsch led the offense, going 1-for-2, scored one run, had three RBI, and stole one base.
Laci Campbell was 2-for-2, scored three runs, had two RBI, and stole one base.
Morgan Tucker was 2-for-3 at bat with a double, scored one run, and had two RBI.
Hannah Hearl earned her ninth win in the circle. She pitched 4.0 innings, allowed two hits, and tallied nine strikeouts.
After Hearl struck out three straight Royals in the top of the first,
Laci Campbell led off the bottom with a single and advanced to third on an error. Deitsch then hit a sacrifice fly to score Campbell, putting VWU up 1-0. With one out, Tucker singled through the left side, Mcqueen singled through the right side, and Knight walked to load the bases. Pollack followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Tucker for a 2-0 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan scored four more runs in the second inning as Keltran singled up the middle. Then,
Sarah Prosser walked to put runners on second and third for
Laci Campbell, who singled to score both runners and put VWU up 4-0. Campbell stole second and advanced to third when Deitsch flew out. Mcqueen singled to center field to allow Campbell to score. Mcqueen stole second, and
Olivia Knight singled to score Knight and give the Marlins a 6-0 lead.
The Marlins scored four more runs in the third inning as Beltran walked, Prosser singled to left field, and Campbell walked to load up the bases for Sammi Deitsch. Deitsch singled up the middle to score Prosser and Beltran.
Morgan Tucker doubled to center field to score Campbell and Deitsch to give the Marlins the 10-0 win.
Game Two:
Laci Campbell led the offense in game two, going 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring two runs, with three RBI, and stealing four bases.
Samantha Deitsch was 2-for-2 with a triple, scored two runs, and had two RBI.
Taylor Mcqueen was 2-for-2, scored a run, and stole one base.
Emma Adams got the win in the circle on senior day. She pitched 3.2 innings, allowed zero hits, zero runs, and tallied seven strikeouts.
In game two, top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time setting the tone with a four-run first inning.
Laci Campbell jump-started the offense after being hit by a pitch, swiping both second and third before
Samantha Deitsch drove her home with an RBI triple to right.
Morgan Tucker followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Deitsch, and after
Taylor Mcqueen doubled and
Olivia Knight reached, the Marlins kept the pressure on.
Emma Adams lifted a sacrifice fly to score Mcqueen, and a wild pitch allowed both
Alison Pollack to advance and Knight to cross the plate, capping a four-run frame.
The Marlins kept rolling in the second, adding another four runs.
Sarah Prosser worked a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a
Laci Campbell RBI single up the middle. Campbell then swiped second and came around on a
Samantha Deitsch RBI single. Deitsch later scored on a fielding error, and after
Morgan Tucker reached, she eventually crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from
Alison Pollack to extend the lead to 8-0.
Virginia Wesleyan put the finishing touches on the run-rule victory with a four-run fourth inning.
Courtney Cole reached on an error to open the inning and later scored alongside
Cali Megaro on a
Haley Sadler two-run single up the middle.
Reese Penny, running for
Alison Pollack, scored on a sacrifice fly by
Sarah Prosser, and
Emma Orr, who pinch ran for Sadler and stole second, came home on an RBI single from
Laci Campbell to seal the 12-0 win.
