The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (20-0, 4-0 ODAC) swept ODAC opponent Randolph, winning game one 20-0 and game two 8-0. The 30 runs set a new program record for most runs scored in a single game, surpassing the previous mark of 29 set on March 15, 1986, in a 29-3 win over St. Andrews.
Game One:
In total, the Marlins racked up 27 hits, with Samantha Deitsch leading the way with four RBI and multiple extra-base hits. Riley Curtice and Cali Megaro also delivered big days at the plate, combining for seven RBI, as the lineup produced runs in bunches from top to bottom.
Inside the circle, Hannah Hearl set the tone with three hitless innings, striking out four to earn the win, while Emma Orr closed out the game over the final two frames. The pitching staff combined to limit Randolph to just three hits in the shutout effort.
Virginia Wesleyan made a loud statement in game one of its doubleheader, overwhelming Randolph in dominant fashion with a 30-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
The Marlins wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for four runs in the top of the first inning. After Laci Campbell reached and moved into scoring position, Samantha Deitsch and Morgan Tucker helped ignite the offense with back-to-back hits. Tucker drove in the first run, and Taylor McQueen followed with an RBI single. Aggressive baserunning, including a steal of home, and an RBI from Alison Pollack capped the early surge.
After a quiet second inning, Virginia Wesleyan broke the game wide open in the third, plating eight runs. Campbell delivered the big swing with a three-RBI double to center, while Deitsch and Tucker each followed with RBI hits to keep the line moving. The Marlins capitalized on defensive miscues and continued to string together quality at-bats, extending the lead to 12-0.
The offensive explosion continued in the fourth inning as Virginia Wesleyan added 10 more runs. Riley Curtice highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double, and later, Cali Megaro launched a three-run home run to put an exclamation point on the frame. The Marlins took full advantage of Randolph's errors while maintaining constant pressure at the plate.
Virginia Wesleyan closed out the scoring with eight runs in the fifth inning. Deitsch drove in two more runs with a double, while Reese Penny, Megaro, and Courtney Cole each contributed RBI hits. Haley Sadler added the final run with an RBI single to seal the 30-run performance.
Game Two:
That would be more than enough for the Virginia Wesleyan pitching staff. Emma Adams was dominant in the circle, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out one to earn the win. Savannah Ballou came on in relief to record the final two outs and preserve the shutout.
The Marlins totaled 12 hits in the contest, with multiple players contributing to the balanced offensive effort. Deitsch, Emma Adams, and Karley Beltran each recorded two hits, while Alison Pollack and Karley Beltran drove in two runs apiece to lead the way.
The Marlins once again struck early, putting up three runs in the top of the first inning. Laci Campbell reached on an error and used aggressive baserunning to move into scoring position before coming home on a wild pitch. Samantha Deitsch drew a walk and later scored on a double by Morgan Tucker, while Olivia Knight added an RBI single to give Virginia Wesleyan a quick 3-0 advantage.
After a scoreless second inning, the Marlins broke the game open in the third with five more runs. Alison Pollack delivered a two-RBI double to extend the lead, and Karley Beltran followed with a two-run double of her own down the left field line. Campbell capped the inning with an RBI single, pushing the margin to 8-0.
