The women's tennis team from Virginia Wesleyan University battled until the final points Saturday but ultimately fell just short in a tightly contested 4-3 match against Averett University.
Averett claimed the early advantage by taking two of the three doubles matches to secure the opening point. Virginia Wesleyan's pairing of Tuva Flink and Zoe Vliegen delivered the Marlins' highlight in doubles, earning a strong 6-1 victory at No. 1.
Virginia Wesleyan responded with a strong push in singles play, winning three matches to keep the contest close throughout the afternoon.
At No. 2 singles, Zoe Vliegen rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Brenda Poulakidas in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. The comeback victory evened momentum and energized the Marlins lineup.
The Marlins also found success in two dramatic matches that went to a deciding super tiebreaker. Jette Dammeier battled back from a first-set deficit to win 0-6, 6-1, 10-5 at No. 5 singles, while Sarah Reich delivered another clutch performance at No. 6, defeating Sunna Maass 6-2, 1-6, 10-6.
