Game Recap: Softball |

No. 1 Softball Stays Hot with Wins Over SVU and Susquehanna

The Virginia Wesleyan University softball team (14-0) defeated Southern Virginia 5-1 in game one of the Bojangles Cross Bay Bash on Day Two of the Tournament, and defeated Susquehanna 13-1 in game two of the day.

Game One:
Virginia Wesleyan finished with seven hits in the contest. Campbell led the offense with three RBIs, while Knight, Pollack, Samantha Deitsch, Taylor Mcqueen, Sarah Prosser, and Beltran each added a hit.
Adams earned the win to move to 5-0 on the season.

No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan opened the day with a strong pitching performance and timely hitting to defeat Southern Virginia, 5-1, at home.

The Marlins struck first in the opening inning. After reaching base and swiping two bags, Laci Campbell scored on a sacrifice fly from Morgan Tucker to give Virginia Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.

Virginia Wesleyan broke the game open in the second inning with four runs on three hits. Olivia Knight and Alison Pollack started the rally with back-to-back singles, and Emma Adams worked a walk to load the bases. Karley Beltran brought home the first run of the frame on a fielder's choice before Campbell delivered the big swing, ripping a triple to left center that cleared the bases and pushed the Marlins' lead to 5-0.

That early cushion was more than enough for Adams in the circle. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Southern Virginia's only run came in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout after a pair of Marlin errors allowed a runner to reach and advance.

Game Two:
Prosser led the offense with three hits and three RBIs, while Tucker added two RBIs with her first-inning homer. Swanson also drove in two runs during the fourth-inning surge.

Hannah Hearl earned the win in the circle, striking out six over three scoreless innings before Savannah Ballou and Emma Orr finished the game in relief.

The Marlins jumped ahead in the first inning when Morgan Tucker launched a two-run home run to right center after Laci Campbell reached base and stole second.

Virginia Wesleyan put the game out of reach with a six-run second inning. A Susquehanna error helped ignite the rally before RBI hits from Sarah Prosser and Samantha Deitsch pushed across runs. Campbell later drove in another run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and additional runs scored on a wild pitch, an RBI groundout from Taylor Mcqueen, and a sacrifice fly from Olivia Knight to make it 0.

Susquehanna got on the board in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly, but the Marlins answered immediately with five more runs in the bottom half. Mackenzie Swanson delivered a two-run single, Prosser added a two-run double to the gap, and Paiton Everett capped the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 13-1.
