The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team (4-1) earned a convincing 21-10 victory over Muskingum University (3-2) on Tuesday evening in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Virginia Wesleyan was led offensively by
Thomas Lewis IV, who recorded a team-high five goals in the win.
Keagan Hall added four goals, while
Ethan Smith,
Anthony Blackburn, and
Johnny Hollinshead each finished with three goals.
Zachary Dupill scored twice and
Logan Czerwinski added a goal to round out the Marlins' scoring.
Muskingum opened the scoring early in the first quarter, but Virginia Wesleyan quickly answered as Hall tied the game off an assist from Hollinshead. Lewis then gave the Marlins their first lead, and goals from Dupill and Smith helped Virginia Wesleyan build momentum. Despite a pair of Muskingum goals midway through the period, the Marlins finished the opening quarter strong to take a 5-3 lead.
Virginia Wesleyan extended its advantage in the second quarter. Hollinshead opened the scoring in the period off an assist from Lewis before Lewis added another goal later in the frame. Muskingum answered with two goals during the quarter, but a late score from Hollinshead gave the Marlins an 8-5 lead heading into halftime.
The Marlins broke the game open in the third quarter with an explosive offensive run. Hollinshead opened the scoring before Lewis added two quick goals during a fast-paced stretch. Hall, Blackburn, and Smith all contributed goals as Virginia Wesleyan scored eight times in the quarter to push the lead to 16-8 entering the final period.
Virginia Wesleyan continued to control the game in the fourth quarter. Hall added another goal early in the period before Smith and Blackburn each found the back of the net. Muskingum added two late goals, but the Marlins maintained their advantage and closed out the 21-10 victory.
Virginia Wesleyan will return to action on Thursday, March 12, when the Marlins host Nichols College. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach.
